Could be a lovely relief from the vegetation-less suburbs around you if you live in the city, and very easy to keep.

Herbs are lovely and green, are easily maintainable and lovely for food, and super cheap. Pansies. Pansies too, the colours are gorgeous, and that little bit of satisfaction of keeping something alive and pretty for an extended period of time.
